Fleet Safety

Many efforts to reduce a company’s risk focus on the safety of its employees. Since vehicle accidents are the number one killer of employees on the job, let’s look at what employers can do to put a Fleet Safety Policy in place.

Two Elements of a Fleet Safety Policy
  • Thoroughly screen employees to ensure they’re capable and qualified to operate vehicles in your fleet.
  • Put a policy in place that gives guidelines for best practices for safety, maintenance, incident response and personal use.

Screening Employees and Potential Employees

Use these four main screening points to confirm the ability and qualifications of potential and current employees to operate company vehicles.

  1. Confirm the validity of employee drivers licenses and eligibility for insurance coverage.
  2. Perform periodic random drug and alcohol testing.
  3. Conduct new–hire and periodic training. Good training programs include defensive driving techniques, winter driving, use of vehicle safety features and hazardous materials training.
  4. Conduct onboard driving tests.

Documenting a Fleet Safety Policy

These policies provide the means to reduce injuries, clarify responsibility and schedules for vehicle maintenance, document guidelines for responding to an incident and establish when it may or may not be permissable to use a company vehicle for personal use.

TriSure can provide a template of a documented policy that covers:

  • Drug and alcohol testing
  • Physical and driving ability evaluations
  • Training
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Incident procedures
  • Personal use of fleet vehicles

The goal for this policy is to provide a safe working environment by protecting workers and company property.

The worst possible time to learn that coverage for your company fleet is insufficient is after a loss or incident. TriSure’s insurance professionals can make sure that you have the right types and levels of coverage for your company fleet.
