RALEIGH — When preparing for Hanna, businesses and homeowners should set aside insurance information in case they experience property damage, says an expert with TriSure.
Bob Eades, CPCU, ACLS, director of claims at TriSure, advises people to put policies and insurance phone numbers inside a zippered plastic bag along with a fully charged cell phone and camera.
It’s also a good idea to back up computer data onto disks and put them in the kit, as well. In case of evacuation, the plastic bag goes, too.
“If a tree comes through the ceiling where you keep your insurance information, the last thing you will want to do is dig around looking for your policy or how to reach an agent,” Eades said. “So make sure you understand your policy and can quickly access your agent or carrier.”
Homeowners or business owners who experience interior water damage, damage that causes a loss of income, or who face even more damage because of unsafe conditions usually move to the front of the claims queue, Eades said, so tell your insurance agent if that’s the case.
And people who experience damage should always take photos and keep receipts for any hurricane–related expenses, he added.
“Insurance carriers want to settle claims quickly and equitably, so it helps tremendously when policy owners have factual information readily at their fingertips,” Eades said.
